A mala (Sanskrit for “garland”) is a sacred strand of beads used in meditation practices. Malas consist of 108 beads and one guru bead, which is larger than the rest. All MalaMaya Mala Bead are designed and hand knotted by Stone Artisan Nicci Kristine and are made with genuine stone, crystal, and holy woods.
Malas are typically used in a meditation practice called “japa” or mantra meditation, in which the practitioner choses a word like “Om” or an “I am” phrase to recite internally while tracing the beads with their finger. The mala beads are used to focus one’s attention and keep track of mantra recitation. The guru bead is used as an symbol & indication of completing 108 mantra recitations.
Mala meditations are useful for any level of practitioner. They encourage rhythmic breathing and introduce new thought patterns to the practitioner. Malas and similar devices have been used in a variety of spiritual and religious traditions for many years, but Nicci creates her males in a classic Tibetan Meditation style hoping the culture from which this practice originates.
